Blessing of the Animals Each October, many Episcopal churches across the country celebrate St. Francis of Assisi (c. 1181-1226) who, as the patron saint of animals, is universally recognized as a protector and lover of all creatures great and small.

Since 2006, people from the community have brought their pets - finned, feathered, hoofed, pawed or clawed - to the annual St. Michael's Blessing of the Animals' ceremony.

Why do we ask God to bless creatures that do not have a conscious ability to worship?.
